Legal Basis

  • • Article 1 of Law 100/1985 amending Personal Status Law: alimony is obligatory upon the husband
  • • Jurisprudence and courts estimate wife's alimony at 20–35% of net income
  • • Multiple wives: each wife's share is proportionally reduced
  • • Child support ranges from 10–20% for the first child, decreasing proportionally for siblings
  • • The custodial mother has the right to suitable housing until the custody age
  • • Article 3 of Personal Status Law: children are obligated to support parents unable to earn
